"What y'all thought y'all wasn't gonna see me? I'm the OSIRUS of this SHIT"

This image was on People Magazine's Website. WEIRD.

ODB died 8 years ago today. Aside from being an ardent WU fan growing up (not to mention an admirer of his appearance in the video for Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy REMIX”--when he has the walkman on and is wearing a yellow jersey that says "School of Hard Knocks??? priceless! genius!), this story, which appeared in the New Yorker in January 2005 is one of the best things that I’ve ever read. Michael Agger describes the travails of one Russell Jones, a 44 year-old art director living a quiet life in Park Slope and sharing a government name with perhaps the scrappiest rapper in the game. Jones would receive regular phone calls from strangers--including Method Man!--looking for Dirk McGirk. Jones was puzzled at first until his younger cousin "who was conversant in hip-hop" filled him in on their mutual nomenclature. Eventually embracing it, and even at times indulging it, Jones developed an affection for Big Baby Jesus. Here’s the piece’s last paragraph:
Over the years of answering these calls, Jones often wondered how the Dirty Bastard was doing. One day, he ran into him on the street. “It was an incredible moment,” Jones recalled. “There was this guy with mini-dreads who had his shirt off. He was wearing cutoff overalls and Timberland boots without socks. He was lurching around with these huge wide steps. You could tell he was a star. You couldn’t take your eyes off him. He had charisma. And I said to myself, ‘That’s Russell Jones. That’s the O.D.B.’ ”
